Iron Silicon Alloy is used as a reducing agent in low-carbon iron alloys.
Ferrosilicon 75 is used as a source of silicon for reducing metal oxides and for deoxidizing steel and other iron alloys. This prevents the loss of carbon from molten steel (so-called heat blocking); ferromanganese, speculum iron, calcium silicide, and many other materials are used for the same purpose.
It can be used to make other iron alloys. Fe Silicon is also used to make silicon, corrosion-resistant and high-temperature-resistant ferrosilicon alloys, and silicon steel for motor and transformer cores. In cast iron manufacturing, ferrosilicon is used to inoculate iron to accelerate graphitization. In arc welding, Ferro Silicon 65 can be found in some electrode coatings.
Ferrosilicon is the basis for the manufacture of pre-alloys, such as magnesium ferrosilicon (MgFeSi) used in the production of ductile iron. MgFeSi contains 3-42% magnesium and small amounts of rare earth metals. Ferro Silicon 72 is also an important additive to control the initial silicon content in cast iron.
